Dr. White’s theory on how people use the Internet, provided me with more information about a topic that I have been considering for a while. With the internet becoming more and more accessible and the availability and popularity of social media sites ever increasing, Dr. White proposed that there are two types of internet users; visitors and residents. In the video Dr. White explains that visitors of the internet use it simply as a resource. When these users log off their device there will be no trace of what they did left behind. For example, someone who is a visitor to the Internet may look something up on Google, find out the information that they need to know and then leave the Internet. On the other side of the spectrum there are residents. Residents of the internet use the internet as an interactive tool and they create a part of their identity there. As a contrast to visitors, when residents leave the internet, they leave behind something that others will be able to see. An easy example is the social media site Facebook. Facebook users create a profile that provides information, pictures and thoughts about the their lives that other Facebook users will be able to see even if the creator is no longer online.

In Will Richardson’s Why School? How Education Must Change When Learning and Information Are Everywhere, he discusses how the recent changes in technology have changed how new generations are learning. Although I was born before the Internet was created, I grew up using it. If you ask anyone around my age they probably will tell you that they are proficient in typing, using Google to find information, and they probably have at least one social media account. Only a few of them however will claim to be an expert at using the resources that technology provides. For the newest generations however, there was never a time before technology and the Internet. They start using devices such as smartphones and tablets oftentimes before they can even talk. According to Richardson, this new generation of learners needs whole different education system and curriculum than the past generations needed. The need for rote memorization and fact recall is no longer vital to the spread of knowledge in our society. We do not need to worry about our history, scientific finds and everyday knowledge being lost or forgotten. All of that information is stored and available online for everyone to see.
